Bacit A is an original medium that reduces GABHS detection to one day instead of two days required with classical sheep blood agar growth and bacitracin disk test. It contains sheep blood agar on one side of a bisection Petri dish and sheep blood agar with bacitracin on the other side.
The throat swab sample is streaked to both sides and the plate is incubated overnight. Growth of beta-hemolytic colonies on the side without bacitracin and their absence on the side with bacitracin indicates the presence of GABHS.
